About Us

Certified Professional Dog Trainer Ty Tate has two decades of experience working with dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes, and backgrounds. Ty’s personal dogs are Alaskan Malamutes (notorious for being “difficult”).

The Beginning

It all started with a dog named Sura.
When Ty adopted Sura, a rescue dog with “every behavior problem under the sun” as Ty says, and everything changed. He had to learn how to help her and resolve her reactivity issues to save her life. It was “pass or fail” time, and Ty was not willing to fail Sura.

Early on, it was frustrating: the only dog trainers Ty found used force on dogs and frightened them. Ty knew there had to be a better way–he didn’t bring Sura into his family to hurt her or make her lose trust in him.

Thankfully, Ty found his mentor, Dr. Ian Dunbar, a legendary, world-renowned dog trainer and animal behaviorist. Dr. Dunbar created the first off-leash puppy socialization and training classes. He also revitalized now-standard training methods such as lure/reward training–the same methods we use at Sura Dog Training. Dr. Dunbar’s training methods are dog-friendly, easy, backed by science and decades of research, and they simply worked.

With time and patience, Ty learned how to resolve all of Sura’s problems and help dogs just like her.

The Continuation

Ty worked in dog rescue for years which, for him, meant real-world application of the safest and most effective training methods to resolve behavior issues in dogs who desperately needed help NOW–because it meant the difference between the dogs finding a home or not.
